Waterproof MP3 Players
Like I've said before, I swim a lot and I like to listen to music. So I frequently use MP3 goggles but those aren't for everybody. An alternative for those hoping to listen to music while swimming is waterproof MP3 players. These are digital music players designed specifically to work under water.
Typical digital music players like an iPod or Zune aren’t waterproof. They might be water-resistant and able to handle some moisture, but completely submerging them in water can completely destroy them.
Waterproof MP3 players are a great option for swimmers. They are also popular with people going on canoe or kayak trips.
That’s why many companies make waterproof MP3 players like swimsuit maker Speedo. The Aquabeat Waterproof MP3 Player costs about $135 and has 1 gigabyte of storage. That’s enough to hold 250 MP3 songs.
Like other MP3 players, the Speedo device hooks into a computer with a USB cord. It can be clipped to goggles or a swimsuit during a workout.
Another option is the Soundwave made by Freestyle Audio. This model retails for about $90 and has 2 gigabytes of storage.
The player hooks into a computer with a USB cable. It straps to a swimmer with an adjustable arm strap. The Soundwave comes with waterproof earbuds.
If you already have a non-waterproof digital music player and don’t want to buy a new one, one option is to buy a special waterproof case.
Manufacturer Otterbox makes “armor cases” for a slew of different iPod models. The waterproof models are crystal clear so you can still see your iPod. The prices vary but they can start as low as $40. The Otterbox is what I have in the picture above.
If you’re buying one of these cases, it’s also a good idea to buy an armband designed to work with them. If you’re swimming, you don’t want to be holding your iPod. With an armband, you can just strap your now waterproof iPod on and start your laps.
